The Tower of Montparnasse Paris France
Montparnasse Tower Paris France
Tour Montparnasse (the Tower of Montparnasse) located in the area of Montparnasse, Paris France is a 210 metres (689 ft) tall skyscraper constructed from 1969 to 1972 to be the tallest skyscraper in France and the ninth tallest EU building.
Designed by architects Eugène Beaudouin, Urbain Cassan and Louis Hoym de Marien Tour Montparnasse was constructed by Campenon Bernard to be on top of the Montparnasse. A large number offices occupy 59 floors of the tower. On the 56 floor visitors can see a restaurant. The top floor’s terrace is open to the public to view the city covering a radius of 40 km.
Two years after its construction, the construction of skyscrapers in the city centre was banned since it had a simple architecture with large proportions.
The tower’s design foredates architectural trends that placed high importance on a view of the outside, and so only offices around the perimeter of each floor have windows.
Some editors in 2008 on Virtualtourist voted Tour Montparnasse the world’s second ugliest building . (Text Source: ‘paris4travel‘)
