  • Its origins as a castle started in the 12th century by Louis VI
  • Philip the Fair was born in 1268 and died in 1314
  • The present edifice begun in the early 16th century by its creater King Francois I who enlargened the buildings, and appointed several famous French and Italian artists to ornament the palace
  • Most of the buildings constructed by Gilles le Breton, the architect
  • Located in the southeastern part of Paris, near the valley of the Seine River
  • The style bearing the name of the castle,the Fontainebleau style (Italian Mannerist style) combines metalwork, painting, sculpture and woodwork.

  • The size of the edifice made double by the King Henry IV
  • A wonderful double staircase constructed in the early 1600s by Louis XIII
  • Turned upside down during the French Revolution, but restored by the Emperor Napoleon I very soon
  • Pope Pius VII jailed by Napoleon for two years
  • Emperor Napoleon gave up his throne in the early 1800′s
  • Restoration made by King Louis Philippe in the middle of 18th Century
  • Thirty four sovereigns, from Louis VI to Napoléon III resided
  • Became a state monument after the empire’s collapse in 1871
