With more than 30 million foreign visitors each year Paris has become one of the world’s most visited tourist destinations ,and inhabitants in Paris are known as Parisians in English. The name Paris has been derived from the Gaulish tribe ,pre-Roman-era the Parisii known inhabitants.

Before the city was named as Paris, the city was called Lutetia during the Roman occupation from the first to the sixth century, but the present name began to replace this towards the end of that duration.

Paris has a great many different nicknames or so-called cliches such as a window on the world, a city of plenty , extraordinary events happen every day in Paris, the city of love, the city of light, a city of symbols , but the most famous one is the City of Light’ known in French as La Ville-Lumiere. In addition ,since the early 20th century, Paris has been known as Paname, a slang name that has been gaining a reputation with the youth in recent years.

In spite of that , the Paris urban unit is an area of urban growth spreading out well beyond the administrative city limits and it has an approximate population of over 9,500,000. Paris urban area has an approximate population of 12,000,000 and in Europe it is one of the most populated areas of its kind.

Moreover, Paris is one of the major cultural and business centers in the world ,and it has been an significant settlement for over two millennia with its many influences on the arts, education , entertainment ,fashion , media, politics , science , and the unique French cuisine that can be found out in a great many restaurants around Paris having all contributed to make its position as one of the main global cities in the world.

The Paris Region is the center of economic activities in France and in 2006 it produced over a quarter of the gross domestic product of France.
